The Thing

The Thing
Director: John Carpenter
Writer: Bill Lanchester
Starring: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David

I have had the pleasure of seeing this movie several times and it was enjoyable to re watch this classic sci-fi thriller.

Taken place in the frigid cold of Antarctica “The Thing” haunts, terrorizes and kills whatever it can and it has its sight on an American Science Expedition Group.  It slowly picks through the members of the team and and due to its ability to take on charecteristics of any individual it is tough to know who to trust and who not to.  This creates an environment of uncertainty amongst the group which in turn creates a chaotic and frightening journey through human emotion and survival.

The Thing did not recieve initial kudos due to an untimely release but as time has passed it has become a cult classic and continues to gain respect from critics.  Although Carpenter has had some great horror movies such as Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13, this is my favorite and cannot help but watch when I see it on the schedule.  This is a must see for everyone unless you have issues with suspense and surprises.  I give it 3 guys easy.

This film centers on a group of Americans conducting a routine scientific expedition in Antarctica. Upon taking in a stray dog that was being chased by crazed Norwegians who die the pursuit, the Americans are left unaware of the horror they have stumbled upon. After an incident involving the stray dog the group discovers they have an alien life form amongst them that is capable of taking over its host and creating a virtually identical copy. Overcome by fear and paranoia the group must now figure out who is still human and stop the alien before it takes them all over.

Based on the short story “Who goes there?” by John W. Campbell, this is the second film that has been created from this story. Not fairing to well during its theatrical release the film is one of the best horror/sci-fi films to date and is a cult classic. In my opinion this is one of John Carpenter’s best films, it’s a great adaptation story with a perfect combination of gore, shock and paranoia. This is a definite must see film which also includes the directors commentary which is also worth checking out.

The Thing (1982)

Director: John Carpenter
Writer: Bill Lanchester
Starring: Kurt Russell, Wilferd Brimley, Keith David
Review By: Griff

Well, I find it hard to believe that anyone who grew up in my generation has not seen this film already but, for the younger or older crowd out there who may have missed it, this movie is a classic. It has some ground breaking special effects for its time and was one of the first truly scary movies I have ever seen.

The movie is actually based on a book from 1938 called Who Goes There? The book has been the premise for many hollywood movies including, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Alien, and in 1951, The Thing From Another World.

Carpenter took a more literal approach to the source material then the other films. The plot revolves around a group of scientist in the south pole who take in a stray dog that runs into their camp. What the scientist don’t know is that the dog has actually been taken over by a shape shifting alien life form.

The alien, struggling to survive, slowly starts taking over the inhabitants of the camp. People start dying, and the scientist struggle to find out who has been taken over and who hasn’t before they are all dead.

I remember watching this movie with my brother back around 1983 when it came to HBO for the first time. It scared the pants off of me. When the head slid of the table and sprouted insect legs, I nearly lost it. At the time, I had never seen anything like it. To rematch it today is little like re-living my childhood.

This is one of those movies that was panned by critics and did fairly poorly when it was initially released. It had an unfortunate release schedule and was going up against a couple of other “minor” films, E.T. and Blade Runner. It was hen pecked by critics for being too gory and was definitely under appreciated. Over time, it has come to be regarded as one of the greatest works of sic-fi horror ever made. It now enjoys an 8.2 rating on IMDB and was listed as by Empire magazine as one of the 500 Greatest movies of all time.

If you have not seen this one then it is a must see. If you have not seen it in years, then it is definitely worth watching again. The Thing gets 3 guys from me.
