Blue Valentine

Director: Derek Cianfrance
Writer: Derek Cianfrance, Cami Delavigne
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams
Review By: Griff

Well, I have been struggling to write this review. I started writing and then deleted what I wrote about six times. This is a tough one. Its not exactly the feel good movie of the year.

The plot revolves around a young married couple (Dean and Cindy) who find that their relationship is falling apart. The two of them decide to go spend a night away to see if they work through the issues that plague their troubled marriage. Through a series of flashbacks we see how the couple met and fell in love and how things slowly started to fall apart.

This is one of the most well acted films I have seen in recent memory. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are both excellent. I know that Derek Cianfrance actually had them live together for awhile and that he would make them improvise a lot of scenes. The result is some incredible performances.

Saying that you like this film is a bit like saying you like going to funerals. It’s a tough watch and it never gives you any relief or comes to some hopeful conclusion. It plays out like you are a nosey neighbor listening to the people next door fight. It’s very raw and real but also very depressing.

Blue Valentine is definitely worth seeing but make sure you are ready to buckle up for a bumpy ride. It gets two guys from me.
