Jamie Morgan (Jim Sturgess), a young man with a birth defect in the shape of a heart on his face, has found out that there are demons on the crime ridden streets of London.  Jamie has to face these demons along with his own demons in this psychological thriller.

Ridley who wrote and directed this film is popular as an art house mogul and from what I have read has been missing in action for too long.  “The Reflecting Skin” is one of Ridley’s most talked about works and I have been motivated to see this film after viewing “Heartless.”

“Heartless” is a dark and intelligent film that focuses on human emotions and how we as a people focus on beauty.  Jamie was willing to give up his soul for a chance at normalcy, and the film asks the viewer the same question.  This choice catches up with Jamie as he loses the only people close to him, including himself.

I enjoyed “Heartless” and as I said earlier I will now go and watch some other Philip Ridley films. Jim Sturgess did a good job portraying a person haunted by his own emotions and I will look forward to more films from him in the future. I give it 1 ½ guys.
