Based on the life of “Irish” Mickey Ward, this film follows Ward’s climb from an unsuccessful professional boxer to becoming the WBU Light Welterweight champion in March of 2000 after defeating Shea Neary.  While focusing on Ward’s come back the film also shows the personal obstacles he had to deal with, a drug addicted half brother/trainer, over bearing mother and new girlfriend.

This film is fantastic, in my opinion the best film reviewed on this site to date.  The acting was great all around, the stand outs being Christian Bale and Melissa Leo who both received Academy Awards.  There wasn’t a point when I ever thought to question the authenticity of the people the actors portrayed.

The attention to detail that was captured was very well done and definitely gave the film a realistic down to earth feel, unlike other biopics which sometimes have a tendency to exaggerate events.  On a side note it was nice to see that the scenes that took place in Lowell were actually filmed in the city and not shot in some alternate location pretending to be Lowell.

This is definitely a very uplifting story with a great attitude, a film that shouldn’t be missed.
